What a year we have had! Let’s start looking forward to longer days and preparing for spring.
Here’s a little project to do indoors to while away the time until we can start sowing seeds.
We will be recycling toilet roll inners to make pots for seeds and seedlings.
You will also need a pair of scissors and possibly a plastic ice cream tub or similar.
Children can help if supervised.
Create a square tube by flattening the cardboard. Make sure the edges are sharp.
Draw a line about 4cm (1.5 inches) from the bottom right the way around.
Cut down to the line and bend the edges back and forth to make the base of the pot.
When the loose flaps are folded in on each other, they will form a flat base.
This is how it should look from underneath.
Stand the pots in a small tub with about 2cm (an inch or so) of cold water in the bottom, with the base in the water. After about five minutes empty the water out. The pot bases will be damp, and need to dry out overnight.
These show the pots filled with compost and a lettuce seedling ready to grow on.
The pots can also be used for seeds, one or two in each, as the days grow longer.
Let me know how you get on and if you have any great ideas of nifty projects you want to share.
